So the story with me reading this book… I took one book with me on a work trip. And I finished that book. So I had nothing to read on the plane home! That’s where the handy airport bookstore comes in. Now this bookstore didn’t have a YA section. And I didn’t know what to do! Because YA is what I read! But they did have this book in their top ten. And I’d heard about it, and wanted to see the movie, so I decided to give it a go. And I almost finished it on the plane ride home.
This book by Mary Anne Shaffer, is written completely in letters. And I knew this going into it, but still didn’t realize just how much story you could get from letters. I loved it! The story is about the island of Guernsey and their Occupation during the war and how they created their own little literary society – completely by accident! It does how a small community can band together at a time of great need and it was just a beautifully inspiring read!
Most of the letters came from Juliet – and I just loved how feisty and feminist she was! She reminded me of a modern Lizzie Bennett and I am all for that life! And her interactions with Dawsey, Sidney and Mark individually are all brilliant! Reading an entire novel trough letters is not for everyone, but for me, it was a break from normal prose and highly enjoyable.
I can see how Ms Shaffer fell in love with the island of Guernsey and wanted to write a story about it. The lifestyle she paints, although still recovering from the war and having some realistic difficulties, is quite idyllic and I am completely in agreement with Juliet wanting to move there!
This story was heartwarming and touching and really highlighted the need for community and common ground in times of trial. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend you do. You will not regret it and hopefully you come away with the same happy feeling I did. It gets a strong ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 from me 😊 Get your own copy here!
Let me know your thoughts if you’ve read it!! Or seen the movie!
Happy readings loves!
