This is a book series I’ve seen around quite a bit in the bookstagram community. And it’s been on my ‘to-buy’ list for ages. So when the lovely Mel – @acosyreader – got me a copy at a bargain sale, I made sure I read it! This review may get a little spoiler-y – fair warning!
I love the idea behind this book. Dystopian setting, having weird magical powers – I’m totally all up for this. It’s like The Hunger Games with magic! And starting with Juliette in solitary confinement – and having been in there for a while – makes for a great question as to the why of the story.
The problem with knowing about books before reading them is that you already have some preconceived ideas about certain characters. For example, I’ve heard that everyone loves Warner. So that straight up sets my expectations for him! And makes me question what happens in the other books, because Warner was still highly questionable in this one. Highly questionable, but still a great character. Juliette as a character isn’t terrible, but she’s not the most relatable character either. But then, I haven’t been thrown in solitary confinement either, so who knows how I’d react. And Adam… I know he’s supposed to be this dreamboat, but right now he just seems a little boring? I don’t know if that may change eventually!
I think my biggest issue with this book was the writing style. The excessive descriptions – some of which didn’t make sense – and the split thoughts over different lines… it ended up getting to me in the end. I kept reading because the story was so interesting, but it could definitely do without all the extra words I felt like were being thrown around.
Even with my issues with the writing and Juliette, I still enjoyed the story and where the story is going. I will want to get the next books, purely to find out what happens – and why everyone loves Warner!
This got ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me! You can grab a copy here 😊 and let me know what you think!
Happy readings loves!
