Book Suggestion Sunday – The Song of the Lioness Series – Tamora Pierce

Happy Sunday book dragons! This Sunday I’m featuring one of my all time favourite series. Tamora Pierce was how I found out I love fantasy fiction and reading about strong female characters! And this series in particular! I love all her series, but this one has a special place for me!

So what is this story about? Here is the blurb for the first book:

From now on I’m Alan of Trebond, the younger twin. I’ll be a knight.

And so young Alanna of Trebond begins the journey to knighthood. Though a girl, Alanna has always craved the adventure and daring allowed only for boys; her twin brother, Thom, yearns to learn the art of magic. So one day they decide to switch places: Thom heads for the convent to learn magic; Alanna, pretending to be a boy, is on her way to the castle of King Roald to begin her training as a page. 

But the road to knighthood is not an easy one. As Alanna masters the skills necessary for battle, she must also learn to control her heart and to discern her enemies from her allies.

The series follows Alanna through her trials in trying to become a knight. The blend of history – for example, I learned so much about knights and pages and court politics from these books – and Pierce’s own brand of magic in these books makes for such an exciting and inspiring read. These books made me want to be a writer!

These books are also quick reads! They’re quite small! Especially when you try to compare it to something like the Throne of Glass series. So you can get through them quickly. Plus – all the Alanna ones are well and truly released so no need to wait for more!

These books contain some of the best book friends, my original book boyfriend, and some truly spectacular magical creatures and moments. This is a world I absolutely wanted to live in. I wanted to know Alanna for real, to live with the magic they have, to be a part of Tortall! I recommend these books to anyone who enjoys an easy read fantasy, with a strong and sassy female lead!
